Explore and Determine Your Topic

This is the first step in preparing and writing a research paper or creating a project.

 

 

First, you need to determine the requirements for this paper/project.

 

Find out what requirements your instructor has:

    Description of paper/project

    Format

    Number of sources 

    Types of sources

    Topic area

 

Open the document below and place this information in the designated columns:

         Research Planning Sheet 

 

 

Now it is time to choose your topic:

 

To determine what topic you are going to research, You must brainstorm:

 

   Find out what topic area your instructor wants you to choose a topic from.

 

   Read an encyclopedia article about the subject area.  

       Online Encyclopedia

 

   Once you have read the article, open the document below and fill it out. Use it as a    

       tool to help you decide on a topic.

           Brainstorm Worksheet

 

 

    Now choose your topic. If necessary give your Brainstorming Worksheet to your teacher

        and have him or her approve your topic. 

 

 Congratulations you have selected your topic! Now you need to move on to the next step.
